Student Stories

The month of February is the first International engagement month in the Asper School of Business! To celebrate this incredible initiative, the Asper Scoop has interviewed the wonderful international engagement co chair Tanvi Sikand to hear more about her experience on the Commerce Students’ Association.

Tanvi is a third year student majoring in Human Resource Management and Finance in the Asper School of Business. Along with her myriad of skills including tying her shoelaces with one hand, she has excelled in leading the International engagement committee this year. She joined the CSA general council because she was looking to become further connected and experience a variety of different areas in the Asper community. When speaking about her passion in her role, Tanvi told us: “What makes me passionate about the International Engagement week events is the idea of networking with students from different backgrounds and learning about their cultures, and the opportunity to hear senior international students sharing their experiences”. When speaking about what she recommends for other Asper students is the importance of becoming involved, she noted that the various options about asper are not only beneficial on resumes, but can also expand each student’s personal network. Tanvi let us know her favourite part of her role this year has been working with her team and getting to know them beyond the virtual connections. When asked if there was anything else she wanted share with the CSA Scoop readers Tanvi told us “My overall experience with CSA has been nothing but amazing, and this includes all the engagement, my role as an International Engagement Co-chair, the volunteer positions, team bonding activities, and the CSA events that I attended. It’s been one of the highlights of my time at Asper and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking to get the most out of their university experience”. Be sure to keep an eye out for the upcoming International Engagement opportunities all February long!

University Life

The University of Manitoba has announced a Compassionate Tuition Credit Initiative to provide relief to students who were impacted academically by the strike that occurred last semester. This initiative differs significantly from the compassionate grading initiative that has been offered in past semesters to students due to the impact of COVID on student learning ability. You may remember the previous opportunities as allowing students to choose whether or not to include grades in GPA calculations, but this current option is related to any courses that students voluntarily withdrew (VW) from due to strike impacts. According to the official press announcement: “This will exclusively be a tuition refund – additional fees such as the sports and recreation, student services and laboratory fees will not be refunded. When applying for the compassionate tuition refund, students will be required to provide additional information and documentation to support their application. If approved, the refund will be applied to the student’s Aurora account as a credit”.
