Student Stories

In Student Stories this month, the Asper Scoop wanted to rather than shine a spotlight on a few individual students, a group of extremely hardworking individuals who have accomplished great things for the Asper School of Business! If you haven’t guessed already, this month we want to shine a spotlight on “Team Toba” and all of the other Asper students who worked hard to put together JDC West!

What is JDC West? If you haven’t heard of it before, it is essentially a student-run business competition, which is the largest of its kind in Western Canada with over 500 students from 12 universities competing in Academic, Debate, Social, and/or Athletic competitions. The Asper School of Business has been competing since the inaugural year of JDC in 2005, and these past two years have brought numerous obstacles with much of the competition taking place virtually due to the pandemic. However, our Team Toba did not let the adversity break their stride, as 2022 brought another successful year in the JDC West competition to the Asper School of Business.

In terms of accolades, Team Toba placed in multiple different disciplines with the Business Strategy and Finance teams taking first place for their efforts! In addition to those amazing feats, the dedication of the Team Toba members led to Asper taking third place for Charity after completing 4 times the required charity hours!

In addition to those winning awards, everyone on Team Toba spent countless hours over this past year preparing and dedicating themselves to representing our school at such a prestigious event so congratulations to everyone on Team Toba for a successful year! And to all those outside of Team Toba who helped to volunteer, organize the conference, or give their support know that your effort is seen and appreciated, what a wonderful group of students we have to put together such an event!

University Life

As some of you may be aware, every year the Commerce Students’ Association appoints a new executive council to run the association and give back to the Asper community. Well, the time has come to once again elect our new CSA President and Vice President Internal for the 2022-2023 academic school year. Only these two positions are elected, all other executive roles are applied for and interviewed at a later date. As an Asper student, the CSA represents you and helps deliver on your experience at this school! Your vote matters and to use it to make your voice heard, it is important to know all of the candidates and what they stand for! Because of our current virtual format, it can feel harder for students to get to know their candidates, but the CSA Scoop is here to help! Check out the comprehensive election timeline below to see exactly how this upcoming election period will take place.

January 25th: The campaign period begins for all those running for a position. You may see infographics posted on social media, videos or even messages from the candidates!

January 28th: Campaign Speeches will take place where each candidate has the opportunity to introduce themselves and their platform to Asper students. The speeches will be taking place virtually and open to all Asper students to attend. See @aspercsa on instagram for more information on how to view the speeches closer to the date.

February 1st: The campaign period ends for all candidates at 4:00PM.

February 2nd: The voting period will open for all Asper students at 9:00AM. Asper students will have the option to vote for both their preferred President and VPI at the same time.

February 3rd: The voting period will close at 4:00PM so that votes can be tallied and eventually announced to the Asper student body.
