Get your Shine on this September!

Volunteer or attend one of Shinerama’s many events happening during the fall semester. Shinerama has MANY great things planned this fall to provide students with an awesome opportunity to make friends, get involved, and have a good time! If you are looking to gain more than just an academic reputation at university, then Shinerama is exactly what you are looking for.

Here are our upcoming volunteer opportunities perfect for YOU!

Shine Day Internal – September 19th Fort Garry Campus

The goal is to collect as many donations as possible while interacting with as many people as we can, think of it as the ultimate networking event. Volunteers are spread across campus at booths, event tents, or wandering different faculties or outdoor spaces. Individuals who donate to our cause are then treated with free ice cream from Chaeban, a complimentary photo with two lovely Alpaca’s and much more. The Quad (green space in the middle of university square) is set up with small booths and activities for students to enjoy. For students who aren’t yet familiar with the UofM campus it’s the perfect opportunity to wander around and get yourself acquainted with the campus and all its wonders.

Shine Day External – September 20th

This is an opportunity for volunteers to be located at one of our 10 “Shine Sites” at various locations across the city. This is an opportunity for students to interact with the greater Winnipeg population with a focus on raising both awareness and funds for CF Canada. It’s one thing to interact with students on campus, but spreading awareness to the whole city has an even larger scale impact.

These two events are the bulk of the Shinerama campaign and are so successful thanks to the dedicated and motivated volunteers that continuously come out and support this cause. Cystic Fibrosis is unfortunately a disease without a cure, and thanks to individuals like yourself who take the time out of their day to volunteer, each year we get closer to finding that cure.

If you find yourself unable to volunteer, there will still be many events put on by Shinerama that are awesome opportunities to participate in and have fun!

Textbook Sale – September 4-5, & 9-12 in the Fishbowl

  • Students re-sell their used textbooks at a reduced rate and a portion of proceeds go towards Shinerama. This is a good opportunity to save some money on textbooks!

Silent Auction – September 30 – October 3 in the Fishbowl

  • AWESOME prizes and gift baskets will be on display for students. Purchasing tickets will give you the opportunity to win some super awesome prizes.

The Office Trivia Night – October 3 at the Hub

  • Trivia night takes place at the Hub, the campus bar and will be all about The Office. In typical Dundies fashion, the winning team will be presented with a grand prize and serious bragging rights. Teams of 4 compete to see who the true superfan is. Keep an eye out for special Office drink and food specials to pair with your Office knowledge.

A Night to Shine Social – October 18 at Upstairs in the Village

  • A fun night with friends to the bar is always awesome! This social is always a hit since everyone loves a post midterm let loose. Going to the bar is fun, but it’s even better when you are surrounded by all your new university friends and classmates.

Shinerama is a powerhouse on the UofM campus and if you haven’t heard about it already, there is no doubt about it that you will soon. It’s hard to miss the 200+ volunteers strolling campus in their bright orange T-shirts, it really is an amazing opportunity to visualize how welcome you are in such a large population of students. Shine’s 55 years and counting of excellent social work and volunteer presence makes it the largest post secondary fundraiser in the country, and absolutely something you wouldn’t want to miss out on. The first two months at UofM will prove to you how prominent the Shine campaign is, and if you are looking to get involved with anything, it should be the most present fundraiser on campus. Shine is so successful thanks to its volunteers and we look forward to seeing you at our events.

Enjoy your first few months on campus, and have a great semester everyone!!

More About CF

Cystic Fibrosis is the most common fatal genetic disease in Canada, claiming the lives of many children and adolescents each year. Although the disease is known to have an effect on multiple areas of the human body, it most commonly affects the digestive system and lungs. CF symptoms vary from person to person, however most suffer from the inability to properly digest fats and proteins, vitamin deficiencies that occur from absent pancreatic enzymes, and chronic infections. The most common cause of fatality is the gradual loss of lung function.

Back in 1960, a child diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis was not anticipated to survive long enough to attend Kindergarten. Thankfully, with the money that has been raised for Cystic Fibrosis Canada since, the life expectancy is now well over 50 years of age. Organizations such as Shinerama and CF Canada hope to soon help find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis and we would for you to help!
