October Scoop: Café Hopping & Local Events

Happy Fall, Readers!

Fall Trees

October marks a month of transformation, in more ways than one. Nature, with its leaves changing from green to red-orange. Halloween, where we put on our best costumes and find joy in long-lasting celebrations. As well, October sees personal transformations as we embrace growth in these busy times.

Fall is my favourite season of the year! Though it feels relatively short compared to the other seasons, I’m appreciating every moment I can get before Winnipeg inevitably becomes chillier.

Let’s take a break from the dread of midterms and job interviews and dive into the cozy, spooky, and fun events lined up this Fall!

Without further ado, I present to the October Scoop: Café Hopping & Local Events

It’s Cafe Hopping Season - Study Spots!

We’re reviewing some cozy study spots this Fall! Some of you may already be familiar with all of these places, and some of you may be new, like me! In any case, I’m here to share my thoughts and experiences about select study spots in Winnipeg.

Come along with me for some cozy café hopping!

Mas Coffee

Más Coffee Co | 100-70 Arthur Avenue

What compelled me to visit this place first was the matcha, and so on Saturday morning I left the house with my study materials and hoped to see what the hype was all about. Upon arriving, I was enveloped with the earthy aroma of coffee beans. A clean, cozy, and welcoming atmosphere, with cute parrot paintings and green decor around.

Unfortunately the matcha was sold out, so I opted for the nutella croissant, while my sister got the everything croissant.

When I tell you the nutella croissant was life changing, I’m not exaggerating. If you’ve never tried a La Belle Baguette croissant, this is your sign.

It was overall a pleasant experience and I’m definitely going to come back again for the matcha! I’d recommend travelling on foot if you don’t want to deal with the limited spots that street parking in the Exchange District offers.

Side note: I love the Más Coffee Co logo. Anyway… let’s hop to the next café!

Cafe Nul | 794 Sargent Avenue

Ever since its opening in May, Cafe Nul has been on my must-visit list. I visited it for the first time last weekend, and I was astonished by the lovely decor and atmosphere. From pastel yellow wallpaper, beautiful hanging plants, garden-styled benches, a bear logo, and cute trinket decorations, it’s everything you can dream of when it comes to an aesthetic café.

Cafe Nul

Cafe Nul is a cozy, Korean cafe and bakery, iconic for its flat croissants, roll croissants, cake, matcha, and many other coffee drinks. It’s been extremely popular on Instagram and a great place for taking photos.

I got the regular basque cheesecake and my sister got the Korean style mango fresh milk.

It was my first basque cheesecake ever. It was very yummy. On the wall beside us, I also enjoyed the painting of a heron in snow, which kept my sister and I company as we ate and studied.

The playlist was such a vibe but at times the volume distracted me from my studies. Otherwise, Cafe Nul is a great place to study if you want to feel like the main character of a cozy book or movie!

Saint’s Cafe | 111 Osborne Street

Last but not least is Saint’s Cafe, located inside Small Mercies and my personal favourite out of the three cafés!

I came here on a rainy Sunday afternoon with my sister, and after scouring the drinks menu, we found the perfect set for us to share. I’m usually more of a water or bubble tea person, but this afternoon I felt the calling for a calming afternoon tea.

Small Mercies Saints Cafe

They had about six tea options to choose from and I decided on the Calming Moon, as it was a non-caffeinated herbal tea and sounded pretty cool.

I absolutely loved the atmosphere at Saint’s Cafe. Since it’s inside a gift shop, you’re surrounded by unique books, home decor, jewellery, and flora. Which means that during study breaks, I was able to wander through the aisles, pretend to read the books, and delight in the Small Mercies and Saints’ Cafe experience.

I’ll be revisiting Saint’s Cafe in the summer when the courtyard is open!

Bonus: The Forks | 1 Forks Market Road

Here’s a bonus study spot, one that isn’t exactly a café, but a classic study area that I personally love and have a history with!

…It’s The Forks! Specifically, it’s the second floor lounge of The Forks, situated between Jenna Rae Cakes and McNally Robinson. It has a large lounge with a variety of wide tables, small tables, coffee tables, and even a balcony to study outside when the temperature is just right.

The forks market

Studying here got me through my high school accounting and pre-calculus classes, so I can attest to this study spot. Usually the background noises and conversations are pretty loud, so if you can’t study in a loud place, then I’d recommend bringing a pair of headphones or earbuds.

There are many places to get a drink, pasty, or food, from Fools & Horses, Tall Grass Prairie, to any other kiosk at the food court. Personally, I love the hot chocolate from Fools & Horses, and the regular croissant from Tall Grass Prairie!

Before I sign off, here’s a quote I recently found but now swear to live my life by:

“It’s the first day of autumn! A time of hot chocolatey mornings, and toasty marshmallow evenings, and, best of all, leaping into leaves!” – Winnie the Pooh

Pookie Out!
